5 Best Hikes in Jindabyne – Our Personal Favourites
If you love wide‑open skies, crisp alpine air, and the feeling of earning your view, you’ll fall in love with these five amazing hikes around Jindabyne. The Snowy Mountains are bursting with scenic trails, some challenging, some cruisy, all unforgettable.
1. Mount Kosciuszko Summit Walk

The Mount Kosciuszko Summit Walk is a rite of passage for anyone visiting the Snowy Mountains. Starting from Charlotte Pass, this 18.6 km return trail takes you above the tree line and deep into the alpine wilderness. You’ll pass by historic huts, cross over Snowy River, and climb gradually toward the summit of Australia’s highest peak at 2,228 metres.
The scenery changes constantly, from rugged granite tors to rolling wildflower plains (which bloom from late spring to summer). Along the way, you’ll catch glimpses of Lake Cootapatamba, Australia’s highest lake, before taking in that unbeatable 360‑degree view from the top.
It’s best done between October and May, when conditions are calm and the snow has melted. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and layers, weather up there can flip in a minute. For most, the hike takes 6 to 8 hours return, and it’s totally worth every step.

2. Snowies Alpine Walk

For something a little wilder, the Snowies Alpine Walk is one of the most spectacular long‑distance trails in NSW. This 55 km multi‑day adventure links Guthega, Charlotte Pass and Perisher, offering incredible variety, glacial valleys, alpine meadows, snow gums, and jaw‑dropping ridgelines.
You can walk sections of it as shorter day trips, or tackle the full thing over four days. Campsites are beautifully placed near rivers and lookout points, and there are huts for overnight use (bookings required).
This walk shows off the best of the Kosciuszko National Park’s high country, and while it’s best suited for experienced hikers, even doing a section gives you a sense of what makes this region so special, clean mountain air, complete silence, and a world that feels far removed from city life.

3. Porcupine Walk

Don’t let the name fool you, the Porcupine Walk is one of the most relaxed and rewarding short hikes near Jindabyne. The 5.7 km return track starts near Perisher and winds through open snow gum woodland and wildflower meadows before reaching Porcupine Rocks.
At the lookout, you’ll be greeted with incredible views over the Thredbo Valley and Lake Jindabyne. On clear days, you can see right across the mountains. It’s perfect for families, couples, or anyone wanting a less intense hike that still packs a scenic punch.
The trail is generally easy underfoot, and you might even spot some local wildlife, wombats, rosellas, or the occasional wallaby grazing nearby. Bring a picnic and spend some time soaking in the view.

4. Clarke Gorge Walking Track

For something more rugged and adventurous, the Clarke Gorge Walking Track near Blue Waterholes is an absolute gem. The 5 km return track follows Cave Creek as it carves through a spectacular limestone gorge.
Expect a few water crossings (so waterproof boots help), towering cliffs, and crystal‑clear pools tucked between mossy rock formations. It’s a completely different vibe from the alpine trails, more secluded, dramatic, and almost otherworldly.
If you’re keen, you can combine it with the nearby Nichols Gorge Caves Walk for a full‑day adventure. It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to take your time, every turn reveals something new.

5. Waterfall Walking Track

If you prefer a gentler walk with a big payoff, the Waterfall Walking Track near Sawpit Creek is a great pick. Starting just off Kosciuszko Road, this 5.8 km circuit winds through tall mountain ash forest, granite boulders and shady gullies before reaching a charming little cascade.
It’s a favourite among families and those who just want to stretch their legs without committing to a full‑day hike. The sound of the water, the cool shade, and the easy‑to‑follow path make it one of the most accessible and enjoyable short walks in the area.
It’s also a lovely option for photography or birdwatching, with rosellas and currawongs regularly making an appearance.
